Agency Overview
The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) is a treasury board crown responsible for emergency communications including Sask911 and SaskAlert, wildfire management, emergency management and fire safety. This centralized agency ensures a single point of contact for communities, greater co-ordination of provincial resources and contributes to safer communities in our province.
The Opportunity
The SPSA is seeking a diplomatic, flexible, and reliable individual for the position of FireSmart Coordinator to fill term positions of two years.
The Wildfire Mitigation Unit supports wildfire preparedness, prevention, and mitigation through public education, assessments, and mitigative work to reduce community risk from wildfires.
The FireSmart Coordinator is responsible for the facilitation of FireSmart-related activities within the SPSA . The position will ensure that the FireSmart activities are supported, developed, and implemented in accordance with Provincial guidelines as well as with the direction and policy provided by the SPSA.
This positions responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Acts as the main point of contact for the FireSmart Program.
- Seek and administer new FireSmart grant opportunities.
- Coordinate public education work being completed through the RCF funds.
- Create internal, external, and public communications related to FireSmart activities in the SPSA.
- Administrate the FireSmart Hub on behalf of the SPSA.
- Organize participation at community events such as Community Wildfire Preparedness Day, school presentations, tradeshows, and more to engage with the public and distribute FireSmart information.
- Provide direction and assistance to implement FireSmart principles on private and community land areas.
- Coordinate FireSmart Home Ignition Assessments within the area.
- FireSmart, Intelli-feu and other associated Marks are trademarks of the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre Ensure adheres to the FireSmart Marks Usage and FireSmart Brand Guidelines.
- Coordinate the implementation of the FireSmart Canada Neighbourhood Recognition Program.
- Recruit, coordinate, and provide training for motivated community leaders that can be mentored to work with self-organized groups of citizens as they plan and implement wildfire mitigations in their own neighborhoods.
- Facilitate FireSmart 101 and FireSmart Level 2-4 training sessions.
- Create a FireSmart working group, Community FireSmart Committee, and Resiliency Committee within the SPSA and host monthly conference calls.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other FireSmart Committee members in the area.
- Work and travel in rural and remote areas.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Contributes to the development of policies, strategic plans, evaluation frameworks, accountability measures, and reporting tools.
- Identifies and gathers relevant data sources, including stakeholder input and environmental/demographic trends, to analyze emerging issues and risks.
- Drafts policies and program implementation plans, conducts consultations, updates procedures, and prepares legislative support documents.
- Produces written materials such as reports, backgrounders, correspondence, briefing notes, and Cabinet Decision Items to support policy recommendations.
- Responds independently to inquiries on new programs, policies, and plans, providing timely analysis and advice to management.
- Represents the Ministry in inter-ministerial and sectoral initiatives, delivers presentations, and offers policy advice and coordination across stakeholders.

Technical Knowledge and Skills:
The successful candidate is required to bring:
- Two years of related leadership experience, including supervisory, facilitation, and public program experience.
- Knowledge of FireSmart, and emergency preparedness programs.
- Knowledge of fire and public safety education, fire service operation, and emergency management.
- Ability to effectively deliver educational and outreach materials to a variety of audiences.
- Some knowledge of Microsoft and social media application software.
- Completion of FireSmart 101
- FireSmart qualifications or willingness to attain.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Satisfactory Canada Criminal Record Check.
