Director, Finance Operations
Position Summary
Reporting to the CFO, this role leads job costing, project profitability, revenue performance, billing, and operational finance within a transportation and project-based services environment. Working closely with Operations and Sales leadership, the Director, Finance Operations ensures projects remain on budget, revenue is accurately captured, and profitability targets are achieved.
This position acts as a strategic business partner, driving accountability, process improvement, and financial performance across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Job Costing & Profitability
- Lead and enhance job/project costing processes.
- Monitor project performance against budgets and estimates, investigating variances.
- Ensure labour, equipment, subcontractor, and project costs are accurately tracked.
- Identify scope changes and ensure additional work is properly approved and priced.
- Analyze project margins and profitability to support pricing and forecasting.
- Recommend improvements to operational efficiency and financial performance.
Revenue & Business Performance
- Support and monitor sales activity, pipeline performance, and revenue results.
- Partner with Operations and Sales on forecasting, pricing, and profitability initiatives.
- Oversee revenue tracking and recognition.
- Develop forecasts and financial models to support planning and decision-making.
Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Oversee billing to ensure invoices are accurate and timely.
- Monitor accounts receivable and support collection activities.
- Resolve billing discrepancies and improve billing processes.
- Align billing activities with project costing and operational data.
Financial Management
- Oversee reconciliations, financial controls, and month-end activities.
- Ensure general ledger accuracy, accruals, and reporting integrity.
- Support year-end reporting and audit requirements.
- Maintain compliance with company policies and reporting standards.
Leadership
- Lead and develop finance, billing, sales support, and administrative team members.
- Foster accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Deliver reporting on profitability, revenue, cash flow, and operational KPIs.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, systems, and controls.
Qualifications
- CPA preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive finance leadership experience in an operational or project-based environment.
- Strong background in job costing, project profitability, and operational finance.
- Experience in transportation, trucking, logistics, construction, industrial services, or similar industries preferred.
- Proven ability to partner with operational leaders on cost control, margin management, and performance improvement.
- Experience with forecasting, pricing, budgeting, and revenue management.
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, month-end close, and accounting principles.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Advanced Excel and ERP/accounting systems knowledge.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
