Our client is seeking an experienced Payroll Manager to oversee and lead a high-performing, payroll team. This role will be responsible for ensuring accurate and compliant end-to-end payroll processing across multiple provinces, while providing leadership, mentorship, and strategic direction to a small team.
This is a hands-on leadership role ideal for someone who enjoys both people management and being actively involved in payroll operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, coach, mentor, and develop a small team of Payroll Administrators
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance team environment
- Provide training and ongoing support to ensure continuous development
- Oversee and review end-to-end payroll processing for a high-volume, multi-province, unionized environment
- Approve payroll to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness
- Act as a backup for full-cycle payroll when required
- Lead all year-end payroll activities including reconciliations and reporting
- Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation, including union requirements
- Support internal and external payroll audits
- Prepare and analyze payroll reports for internal stakeholders
- Leverage Excel to manage and interpret large data sets
- Work closely with Finance and HR to ensure alignment on payroll processes and reporting
- Communicate payroll policies, updates, and changes clearly across all levels of the organization
- Participate in and lead payroll-related projects such as upgrades or M&A activities
- Support the integration of newly acquired employees into the payroll system, ensuring accurate onboarding, data validation, and alignment with internal payroll processes and policies
- Partner with HR and Finance during acquisitions to ensure a smooth transition, including payroll setup, compliance, and employee communication
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and efficiencies
Qualifications
- PCP or PLP designation preferred
- Minimum 2+ years of payroll management experience
- Proven experience overseeing high-volume, multi-province payroll in a unionized environment
- Experience leading and supporting a small, tenured payroll team
- Experience with Payroll Software such as Dayforce, ADP WFN or UKG strongly preferred
- Advanced Excel skills including: Pivot Tables, XLOOKUPs, Managing large data sets
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong presentation skills
