Job Description:
Program 1: BMT Billing Automation
Lead Business Analyst, Commercial Banking and Billing Automation
Employment Type: Contract
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Hybrid
On-Site Requirement: Mondays and potentially the first Friday of each month
Target Start Date: As soon as possible, with onboarding targeted before the end of October
Contract Duration: Approximately 12 months, with potential extension
Position Overview
- Apex Systems is seeking an experienced Lead Business Analyst to support Our Client’s Business Management Technology, or BMT, billing automation program.
- The program will modernize and automate a highly manual billing and file-processing environment. The current process involves approximately 100 files received from multiple sources and managed through manual, email-based workflows. The selected Lead Business Analyst will establish the requirements approach, lead discovery, facilitate complex stakeholder discussions, and provide direction to a supporting Senior Business Analyst.
- This position requires significant experience in commercial or corporate banking, along with the ability to bring structure, clarity, and momentum to an evolving program.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the business analysis strategy, work plan, and requirements approach for the BMT billing automation program.
- Lead current-state discovery across approximately 100 files, source systems, business processes, and manual workflows.
- Review available documentation and identify gaps requiring additional analysis or stakeholder input.
- Facilitate focused requirements sessions with business, operations, technology, and development stakeholders.
- Translate complex and sometimes loosely defined business needs into clear, actionable requirements.
- Ask targeted questions and maintain control of discussions involving large or highly detailed stakeholder groups.
- Document current-state and future-state workflows, business rules, data requirements, process dependencies, and exception scenarios.
- Develop and maintain business requirements documents using Microsoft Word and Visio.
- Partner with development and architecture teams as the future solution and database design are defined.
- Establish clear deliverables, milestones, dependencies, risks, and decision points.
- Provide direction and work assignments to the Senior Business Analyst.
- Review and validate detailed analysis and documentation completed by the Senior Business Analyst.
- Support the development of business requirements targeted for completion by the end of December and draft solution requirements targeted for January.
- Contribute to the business case planned for February.
- Ensure stakeholder sessions are well prepared, efficient, and productive so that business teams can continue supporting daily operations.
- Escalate risks, unresolved decisions, and requirements gaps that could affect delivery timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive Business Analyst experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex business analysis workstreams or transformation programs.
- Strong commercial or corporate banking experience.
- Working knowledge of commercial banking products and services, including:
- Deposit products
- Cash management services
- Corporate or commercial client servicing
- Billing processes
- Back-office financial operations
- Proven ability to plan and structure business analysis activities in environments where the solution is not fully defined.
- Strong experience leading difficult or complex stakeholder discussions.
- Advanced requirements gathering, process analysis, and documentation skills.
- Strong process-mapping experience using Microsoft Visio.
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and formal business requirements documentation.
- Exceptional verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly, precisely, and confidently.
- Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and drive stakeholders toward decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, computer science, technology, engineering, or a related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous billing automation or billing transformation experience.
- Experience building requirements for a new database, workflow solution, or operational platform.
- Experience working within a major Canadian financial institution.
- Experience with Jira and Confluence.
- Engineering education or professional background.
- Experience supporting business cases and solution requirements.
Success Profile
- The successful candidate will be a highly seasoned Business Analyst who can quickly establish a plan, structure an ambiguous assignment, and ask incisive questions. Direct knowledge of a specific technology is less important than the ability to lead, organize, facilitate, and produce high-quality outcomes in a demanding stakeholder environment.
Interview Process
- Initial interview with the client hiring manager.
- Second interview with the hiring manager’s leader or members of the delivery team.
- Professional reference checks may be required.
- Candidates are not expected to provide confidential work samples from previous banking engagements.
