Program 2: Customer Profitability Insight Platform Modernization
Lead Business Analyst, Data and Reporting Modernization
Employment Type: Contract
Location: Toronto, Ontario, Hybrid
On-Site Requirement: Mondays and potentially the first Friday of each month
Target Start Date: As soon as possible, with onboarding targeted before the end of October
Contract Duration: Initial contract with potential extension through the two-year program
Position Overview
- Apex Systems is seeking a data-focused Lead Business Analyst to support our Client’s Customer Profitability Insight, or CPI, platform modernization.
- CPI is an established platform that provides analytics and reporting to relationship managers and analytics teams. It also supplies data feeds to downstream platforms and a separate billing engine. The program will migrate the existing technology environment from Netezza, Informatica, and Cognos to Azure, Databricks, and Power BI.
- The environment includes approximately 670 data sources across multiple layers, with partial and inconsistent documentation. A second reporting system operating on the same infrastructure is also included in the migration scope. The successful candidate must be genuinely comfortable working with data, reporting platforms, integrations, and complex technical environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the business analysis strategy, requirements plan, and workstream structure for the CPI modernization program.
- Develop a practical requirements methodology for a complex migration program where the approach is still being defined.
- Lead discovery across approximately 670 data sources, multiple data layers, reporting components, and downstream integrations.
- Assess existing documentation and establish an approach for addressing documentation gaps and inconsistencies.
- Lead current-state analysis of the Netezza, Informatica, and Cognos environment.
- Support requirements development for the future Azure, Databricks, and Power BI environment.
- Facilitate complex discussions involving business stakeholders, data teams, analytics teams, reporting users, architecture, development, and downstream system owners.
- Define reporting, analytics, data transformation, data lineage, integration, and downstream data-feed requirements.
- Help distinguish migration requirements from opportunities for process or reporting improvements.
- Document system dependencies, data flows, business rules, reporting logic, and stakeholder requirements.
- Establish plans, priorities, dependencies, risks, and decision points across a long-running modernization program.
- Assign workstreams and detailed analysis activities to the Senior Business Analyst.
- Review and validate documentation and findings completed by the Senior Business Analyst.
- Translate technical concepts into clear business language and business needs into actionable technical requirements.
- Support planning toward the mandatory Netezza exit target of approximately September 2028.
- Maintain alignment between the CPI platform, the second in-scope reporting system, and downstream consumers.
- Identify risks related to data quality, incomplete documentation, reporting continuity, and downstream impacts.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive Business Analyst experience.
- Demonstrated experience leading requirements for data modernization, platform migration, analytics, reporting, or data warehouse programs.
- Strong understanding of data structures, reporting environments, ETL processes, data movement, integrations, and downstream data consumption.
- Ability and demonstrated interest in working within highly technical, data-intensive environments.
- Experience facilitating complex discussions involving both technical and business stakeholders.
- Strong planning, workstream leadership, and requirements management capabilities.
- Experience working with incomplete documentation and ambiguous requirements.
- Strong documentation and process-mapping skills using Microsoft Word and Visio.
- Exceptional verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex information clearly and confidently.
- Ability to lead a supporting Business Analyst and review detailed work products.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, economics, computer science, technology, engineering, or a related discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with one or more of the following:
- Microsoft Azure
- Databricks
- Microsoft Power BI
- Netezza
- Informatica
- Cognos
- Previous experience supporting a large-scale data platform or reporting migration.
- Financial services, banking, insurance, or another reporting-intensive industry background.
- Familiarity with financial services terminology, including lending products, net interest income, or related profitability measures.
- Experience documenting data lineage, data transformations, reporting logic, or interface requirements.
- Experience with Jira and Confluence.
- Engineering education or professional background.
Success Profile
- The successful candidate will be a seasoned Business Analyst who genuinely enjoys working with data and can operate confidently in a highly technical environment. The individual must be able to establish structure where the requirements methodology is still evolving and lead stakeholders through a complex, multi-year modernization program.
- Direct Azure, Databricks, and Power BI experience is preferred but not mandatory if the candidate has successfully delivered a comparable data modernization or migration initiative.
Interview Process
- Initial interview with the client hiring manager.
- Second interview with the hiring manager’s leader or members of the delivery team.
- Professional reference checks may be required.
