Description:
We are hiring a Commissioning Operator (Power) in a net new position for a 1-year contract based in Alberta, Canada. Reporting to the Commissioning Coordinator for the Power Block, this role will support the commissioning, startup, testing, and stabilization of Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) and a Steam Turbine Generator (STG). The successful candidate will work closely with vendors, subcontractors, engineering teams, and operations personnel to safely energize equipment, execute commissioning procedures, troubleshoot system performance issues, support reliability testing, and assist with operator training while ensuring compliance with industry safety standards.
Must Haves:
- Minimum 4th Class Power Engineer Certification
- 3-5+ years of hands-on operating experience with Gas Turbine Generators (GTGs) and/or Steam Turbine Generators (STGs)
- Strong understanding of GTG and/or STG operations
- Experience supporting commissioning, startup, testing, and troubleshooting of power generation equipment
- Ability to perform field-based commissioning activities, including functional testing and trial runs
- Experience working with vendors, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge of industrial safety practices, energy isolations, and work permit systems
- Ability to review, follow, and execute commissioning packages, procedures, and startup plans
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Willingness to work in a hands-on field environment and provide operator training and mentorship
Plusses:
- Direct commissioning and startup experience with gas turbines and steam turbines
- Experience supporting HRSG chemical cleaning and system flushing activities
- Experience with steam line blowing, turbine roll and heat-up activities
- Exposure to overspeed testing, synchronization, load progression, and reliability testing
- Experience commissioning STG condenser and cooling water systems
- Familiarity with generator, excitation system, and static frequency converter testing
- Experience redlining or updating operating procedures and work instructions
- Previous experience training operations personnel and mentoring junior team members
- Experience working on large-scale industrial, power generation, petrochemical, or energy projects
- Knowledge of Alberta industrial safety and permitting practices is considered an asset
